Description
Lloyds Bank is a finely detailed Inter-War classical bank building featuring two elevations. It is one storey high with a basement and has a nine-bay entrance front that is pilastered and made of ashlar. The entrance front has a blind attic storey that steps up in the center. It features an overall dentil cornice and a plain frieze, with fluted two-thirds Ionic columns that have anthemion neck-bands flanking a solid entrance bay. Above the entrance bay, there is a cornice on volute brackets adorned with a bay-leaf garland, and the entrance consists of double panelled doors with paterae and anthemion bosses. The solid end bays are clasped by pilasters with oval windows, and the windows have fixed small-pane glazing with aprons. The five-bay flank elevation has a similar design, leading to a low extension at the rear.
Inside, the banking hall is exceptional, featuring Ionic pilasters, a dentil cornice, and a rich coffered ceiling. The rear wall has clerestory glazing, and there are dentilled cornices above the overdoors, with two-panel doors set in lugged architraves. Modern bandit-screens have been added to the original counters.
