Description
High Street Baptist Church is a Grade II listed building featuring a bold neo-classical front with three bays, constructed of painted render. The design includes an advanced, pedimented center and parapets on the side bays, topped with a gable crucifix. A bracket cornice and a band course sit beneath a recessed tablet that reads "High Street Chapel," while a deep cornice is positioned above a banded rusticated ground floor. The outer first-floor windows have pediments and leaded glazing, while the ground-floor windows are plain.
The monumental central entrance features a plain arch leading to a later vaulted porch that breaks through the cornice, flanked by detached Doric columns on the jambs and twin pilasters beside a segmental inner doorway.
To the side, a one-bay return mirrors the main style, followed by four bays with simple walls, plain bands, and round-headed upper windows adorned with tracery.
Inside, the church boasts a fine two-storey interior with cast-iron columns that support a three-sided panelled gallery, which features an arcade treatment at the gallery level. A large platform with a pulpit and seating is located against the inner wall.
