Description

Christ Church is a 19th-century building featuring a plan that includes a chancel flanked by an organ chamber and vestries, transepts, an aisled nave, and west and south porches. The exterior is constructed with snecked facings and freestone dressings, topped with slate roofs. It has gable parapets adorned with crucifix finials, modern bargeboards, and diagonal buttresses with set-offs. The east wall showcases a four-light traceried window with crowned headstops, while the southeast angle features a pointed doorway with dragon-stops. The transepts are highlighted by twin traceried lancets grouped with oculi inspired by Westminster, and the clerestory windows are multi-cusped and triangular. The paired aisle windows have impaled cinquefoil heads. The west door is surrounded by a ball-flower motif, topped with an elaborate traceried rose window, and richly foliated corbels are present at the apex, where a bellcote once stood.

Inside, the spacious area boasts arched-brace roof trusses with collars and carved polygonal corbels that connect to ball-flower bands and hoods, with cusped trusses in the transepts. The transept arches lead to a three-bay nave arcade featuring alternating piers and wall-posts, and flying timber arches support the lean-to aisle roofs. The west gable end is accentuated by a high pair of foliage brackets. The east window glass, dated 1899, is signed by E R Suffling of London.
