Description
The Newbridge Chainworks Canal Basin, located on the Glamorganshire Canal, features walls made of snecked rubble and flat dressed copings, oriented roughly north to south. The basin opens out on both sides. On the west side, the towpath gradually descends from north to south. The southern end has later concrete slab copings, and the towpath is also laid with later concrete. Near the northern end, there is an outflow culvert with a dressed stone surround, just south of which is a butt joint that marks the widening of the original canal to form the basin. On the east side, the wall is only visible in the northern half of the basin, as a later retaining wall has been built over the rest. The east wall shows evidence of two phases of construction, with an earlier coping course visible below the current coping level.
