Description
No. 50, which includes T.I. Griffiths Grocery, is a two-storey shop with a dwelling above. The upper part of the building is made of coursed local sandstone blocks with snecked faces. It features two windows with modern frames in original openings, which still have single stone slab sills and voussoir lintels. The shop front has plate glass and a doorway that is set back, with an additional doorway to the house on the left side. Broad, panelled pilasters flank both the shop and house doors, supporting bracketed end stops for the fascia and cornice. The cornice is lightly moulded, while the fascia has a replaced painted inscription. The plate-glass front includes slender corner three-quarter mullions. The double shop doors are panelled in the lower halves, glazed above, and topped with a rectangular overlight. The stallboard is made of green encaustic tiles, painted black, and the doorway features black and white tiles laid in a diaper pattern. The house door is located within a shallow, panelled porch and is also panelled, with a rectangular overlight above.
Inside, the premises retain many original fittings, including shelving and counters.
