Description

Bethany Chapel, built in 1873, is a two-storey building originally designed with three bays but later enlarged to seven, featuring curved pseudo transepts. The chapel is constructed of painted rendered stone and brick, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The gable facade has channelled render and plain, slightly recessed two-storey bays that include a range of three renewed round-headed four-over-two pane horned sash windows with stone sills, channelled voussoirs, and a keystone with an impost band at abacus level. The ground floor has rectangular four-over-two pane sashes, and the gable features a pediment with a cornice, renewed verges, and an inscription panel stating "Bethany Baptist Chapel 1873."

The central doorway, accessed by a stone step, leads to an imposing distyle portico supported by two freestanding and two attached columns with roll moulded capitals and bases, square plinths, and abaci. The heavily moulded entablature has a decorative boarded ceiling, and there are two stone steps leading to the central double five-panelled doors. The side windows consist of round-headed four-over-two pane horned sashes above and rectangular four-over-two panes below.

Inside, the furnishings mainly date from the time of enlargement. The entrance from the south leads into a vestibule with a black and white marble floor. Two staircases ascend to a four-sided raked gallery supported by nine cast iron columns, with an organ positioned at the front right. The gallery features boarded dados, a decorative wooden ceiling with metal grilled ventilators, and hoodmoulds over the windows. The platform includes a carved wooden pulpit and a set fawr with classical detailing and a scrolled metal communion rail. The numbered pews curve to the sides, with panelled sections downstairs and boarded sections above. Behind the platform is a meeting room that was formerly a Sunday School, which has been modernised.

The front boundary wall is made of rock-faced stone with painted ashlar coping, and includes end and gate piers with deep plinths, painted moulded string courses, and cross roofed capstones. There are part finialed metal railings and central gates.
