Description

Wyndham Arcade, built in 1887, features a three-storey, seven-bay Italianate facade made of painted brick, with stone and stucco window bays and decorative elements. The building has slate roofs with ridge cresting and a single brick stack located towards the right end. At the top, there is a raised pedimented gable with a ball finial, tripartite arched windows, and flanking balustered parapets that connect to the second-floor windows, which are adorned with corbelled aedicules over a wide and high arcade entry. The inscription "WYNDHAM 1887 ARCADE" is displayed within an elliptical arch.

To the left, a four-bay pilastered frontage features corbelled bipartite bays that are linked vertically with arched heads, which once had ball finials that broke through the eaves cornice. The sash windows have small-pane glazing at the heads. The good floor cornice above the shop fronts is supported by paired brackets and has arched finials, although modern fascia boards have been added. A similar two-bay frontage is found on the right side.

The original arcade entrance is two-storey and has a mildly classical design, featuring a modern triangular glazed roof supported by arched cast-iron brackets with traceried spandrels and "hopper" capitals. The bracket cornice rises towards the St Mary Street end. The first floor primarily consists of three-light timber windows with small-pane upper glazing. The shop fascias have moulded cornices with fluted end brackets, and the pilastered shop fronts are fitted with moulded surrounds that include single mullions and roll-mounted sills, with offset doorways beneath fanlights. Most shop fronts have modern security shutters and boxes.
