Description
The Philharmonic Hall is a three-storey building featuring a front made of Caen stone and yellow brick. It has a classicising facade with a layout of two-three-two bays, which are divided by pilasters and have an entablature on each storey. A pediment sits above the central three bays. The first floor includes round-headed windows with keystones and sash glazing, positioned between pilasters that have Corinthian capitals. The upper floor has segmental-headed windows with keystones, with the central windows being narrow and arranged in pairs.
The ground floor was modernised in 1997 but still retains a pair of Ionic columns flanking the entrance. Originally a Victorian music hall, the pub restaurant has walls that feature Corinthian pilasters supporting an entablature and a deep cove with lunette windows. The ceiling is divided into panels, and there are rebuilt galleries on the sides supported by iron posts. The stage is very shallow and flanked by paired columns, which originally had a large projecting apron. The former stalls have been converted into a modern bar, and the lobbies are designed in a Victorian style.
