Description
The Former Prince of Wales Theatre is a building located on St Mary Street, designed with a narrow Portland stone entrance block that resembles a Classical temple front. It features a distyle in antis with giant columns supporting an open pediment, and there is a niche above with three windows and a statue of a female figure. The entrance has been altered and includes a canopy.
On the Wood Street side, the exterior showcases a Venetian Gothic design, constructed from bathstone ashlar, with a steep slate roof and a parapet adorned with arcaded panels. At the second floor, there are nine windows arranged in a 2-5-2 grouping, with single niches above and between the outer window groups. The first floor has a pair of large arches, which are now blind due to remodelling of the ground floor, flanked by Gothic windows featuring two lights with quatrefoils in their heads. The ground floor has been remodelled in a simple classical style with cement render, and the lobby tiles are from the late 20th century.
The building returns to Great Western Lane, where it is constructed of snecked rock-faced rubble. This side has one bay with a parapet, followed by unusual superimposed panelling reminiscent of the front of a Gothic church, complete with a round window near the apex of the gable. There are doorways that appear to be in aisles, and the elevation continues with windows at various levels and doorways with yellow brick dressings.
