Description

The stables to Cardiff Castle, located in Bute Park, are a quadrangular stone building with a slate roof, constructed between 1872 and 1875 using Newbridge stone and green Welsh slates. The building has two storeys and features gabled entrances with wide pointed arches, which are flanked by narrower arches on the north and south sides. A gallery runs around the interior of the courtyard at the first floor level. On the north and east sides of the courtyard, the roof descends to the sills of dormer windows, with six dormers on the north side and seven on the east side, one of which is modern. The west side of the courtyard has three gabled dormers, while the eaves level is higher on the west and south sides, giving them a less romantic appearance. Outside the courtyard, the south front is characterized by subtly balanced groups of mullioned and transomed windows on either side of the central arch.
