Description
The Temple of Peace & Health is a building constructed from Portland stone ashlar with pantiled roofs. The entrance elevation features a high central block flanked by two-storey wings. The centre has a portico supported by four square pillars, which hold up a slab entablature adorned with roundels and a flat modillion cornice. The tall bronze window frames include a central frame that extends down to form a doorframe. On either side of the centre, there are six-bay wings with hipped tiled roofs that have ridges lower than the parapet of the central block. These wings feature a projecting cornice and tall rectangular windows on both the ground and first floors, with much shallower windows in the basement fitted with small-pane metal casements. Behind the centre, there is a hall that runs at a right angle.
Inside, the lobby and vestibule showcase a coloured marble floor and facings. The hall, reminiscent of a temple, is supported by fluted piers made of black Italian marble veined with gold. It has a coffered ceiling painted in green and gold, with tall side windows lining the narrow aisles. Below, in the crypt, there is a small vaulted chapel.
