Description
The Bute Building is a two-storey structure designed in a Classical style, featuring Roman Doric columns and Grecian detailing, along with channelled rustication on the corner bays. Constructed from Portland stone, the building has small pane metal casement glazing. The northeast elevation consists of 15 windows and includes a prominent central Doric portico in antis, which is adorned with an entablature, a blocking course, and a high rectangular attic storey that has a blank northeast elevation. The main entrance is accessed through the portico, leading to a doorway in the wall behind, which is flanked by two square windows on either side and topped by five tall rectangular windows on the first floor. On either side of the portico, there are lateral wings that are also two storeys high, each featuring five bays of rectangular windows on both the first and lower floors, complete with a cornice and blocking course, and rustication. The northwest and southeast elevations display 16 bays, each with projecting end pavilions that feature giant orders of columns in antis. Inside, there is a low square entrance hall with stairs to the left and right.
