Description
The Welsh National War Memorial is a significant structure featuring a circular colonnade made up of unfluted Corinthian columns, which includes three projecting rectangular porticos. The frieze displays an inscription in English on the exterior and in Welsh on the interior. Each portico is gated with brass gates and is accessed by three short flights of steps that lead down to a circular area. In the center of this space is a circular fountain basin, which supports a three-sided podium. The lower section of the podium is rectangular, while the upper section is circular, with projecting columns that reflect the shape of the outer colonnade. Internally, the base of the colonnade is lined with stone seats. The three bays of the upper podium feature three bronze statues of servicemen, each representing one of the three military services and holding wreaths. Atop the column is a bronze statue of a nude male figure symbolizing victory, accompanied by bronze dolphins below.
