Description

The former drinking fountain canopy is located in the rose garden of Victoria Park and is listed as a Grade II structure. This intricately designed cast iron canopy was originally positioned over a drinking fountain. It features an octagonal shape supported by slender cast iron columns, which have decorative caps. The canopy includes arches, spandrels, and medallions that contain relief representations of birds, with additional birds depicted above. The entire structure is topped with a small, decorative dome that has pierced detailing and is finished with a spike finial. An inscription on the canopy reads, "In Memoriam Lewin L Samuel. Aged 39 years. Died 1893. Presented to the City of Cardiff in the year 1908 by his brothers in affectionate remembrance." This canopy follows the same design as the one over the fountain in Bute Place, Butetown.
