Description
Salem Eglwys Bresbyteraidd Cymru is a chapel built from rock-faced Pennant sandstone with Bath stone dressings, featuring a slated ridge roof. It has a gable end facing Cowbridge Road East. The main front has a slightly projecting pointed arch doorway at the center, topped by a large 7-light pointed-arch window with panel tracery and an ogee hoodmould. At the southeast corner, there is a 4-storey tower that includes a mix of arched, rectangular, and circular windows, capped with a stubby spire. The two-storey side elevations are divided into bays by stepped buttresses, with 2-light arched windows on the lower floor and 2-light rectangular windows above, all featuring panel tracery. A side entrance connects to the Sunday School hall at the rear. The Sunday School has a two-storey gable elevation, with the lower storey divided by buttresses into three bays, featuring 2-light, 4-light, and 2-light square-headed windows, along with a large 6-light round-headed window above, all with panel tracery.
The interior was not seen during the resurvey. It features a 4-bay ceiling with sloping sides and pseudo hammer-beam roof trusses, including trussed tie-beams and iron tie-bars. There are octagonal timber ventilators in the flat center section of the ceiling. Raked galleries on three sides have canted corners, with panelled timber fronts supported by cast iron round columns. The rear gallery extends into a recess between stair towers. The panelled timber 'set fawr' has rounded corners, and there is a wide, curving 2-tier panelled timber front to the pulpit with steps on both sides. An organ and pipes are set in a pointed-arch recess behind the pulpit. The side windows at ground and gallery levels, as well as the 7-light window behind the rear gallery, feature coloured Art Nouveau decoration. The entrance vestibule includes gallery stairs with iron balustrading at either end and lobbies leading to the chapel. At the rear, there is a large Sunday School hall set at right angles to the street.
