Description
The Corporation Public House is a building constructed from dark grey rockfaced pennant sandstone rubble, featuring painted stone dressings and Welsh slate roofs. It is designed in a mixed Gothic style and stands two storeys high with an attic, highlighted by a taller four-storey tower above the main entrance. The building has a convex curved frontage located at the corner of Cowbridge Road East and Llandaff Road. To the left, the block extends with an additional three bays, which are Nos. 190-194 (even) Cowbridge Road East.
The first bay from the left, which is part of The Corporation, was likely originally built as a shop with accommodation above. It features an elliptical arch for the ground floor shopfront, with a corbelled four-light oriel above, each light containing one over two panes, supported by mullions and transoms. This oriel is flanked by single-light windows, each with one over two panes. Above the oriel, there is a two-light gabled dormer with a strip vent in the gable, and a tall brick stack rises from the steeply pitched roof.
The main hotel section has three doors and six windows on the ground floor, arranged as D.W.D.W.D.W.W.W.W. The windows are three-light arch-headed sashes with colonnettes, while the two far-right bays feature two-light windows. The doors have elliptical arches and colonnette jambs, with the central bay serving as the main entrance, topped by a corbelled oriel similar to the one described earlier. To the left of the entrance, there are three two-light windows and two three-light windows, while to the right, there is one three-light window and three two-light windows. The attic level includes four dormers on the left and three on the right, consistent with the earlier design. Above the entrance at this level is a small two-light window set within a square tower that rises through another floor, which is arcaded with four strip lights on each face, culminating in a pyramidal roof. The building has a steeply pitched roof with tall brick stacks, although the rear elevation has not been observed.
Inside, the ground floor has been opened up into a single bar space, retaining some joinery and one surviving fireplace. The upper floors have not been seen.
