Description
Retainers' Hall at East Orchard is a single-storey building constructed from coursed, roughly squared local lias limestone rubble, featuring putlog holes and a battered base to the walls. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos sheets. The long rectangular structure is aligned north-south and separates the upper and lower courtyards of East Orchard. It has two opposed doorways, with the eastern doorway still intact. This doorway has a pointed head with chamfered dressings, while the jambs are square and unchamfered. To the north of this doorway, there is a small square window, another window in the north gable, and one above it, which was recorded in 1869 as having a trefoil head with dressed quoins and openings. There is also a slit vent in the south gable.
Inside, there is no evidence of internal divisions or a fireplace. The roof, dating from the 19th century, features seven bays with queen struts and iron reinforcement on the struts.
