Description
The St Athan War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure made of Portland stone ashlar. It takes the form of a square pillar set on a moulded base, which stands on three stone steps and a stone platform. The pillar features entasis and rises to a dentil cornice, topped with a moulded projecting capping that supports a ball on a swept peak. On the south face facing the road, there is an arched tabernacle that bears an inscription honoring those who fell in both World Wars, along with the wording, "THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THE PARISHES OF ST. ATHAN, FLEMINGSTONE, GILESTON AND EGLWYSBREWIS." Below the tabernacle, there is an inscription in Welsh. The steps are enclosed by a square of late 20th century steel railings.
