Description

Top Lodge is a building constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring an asymmetrical plan with an entrance bay on the left and a hexagonal lodge on the right. It has a deeply embattled parapet supported by a corbel table that extends across the front, with separate pitched roofs for each bay. On the left, there is a segmental pointed arched gateway with voussoirs and a roll moulded surround, leading to an ashlar reveal with a decorative double gate in a portcullis style attached to the rear. Above the apex of the gateway is a single trefoil headed light with a wide ashlar surround under a square hood, flanked by stepped buttresses.

Inside, there is a rubble arched vault in two bays with a wide central rib band. To the right, a four-centred arched doorway leads into the house, featuring a chamfered surround and a reeded six-panelled door, with black stable tile flooring. The gatehouse frontage on the right has narrow pointed arched lights with wide chamfered surrounds on three sides of the bay at two levels. The first floor has three-pane fixed glazing, while the ground floor features narrow casements. Wider pointed arched windows are located on the side and rear, including a long six-pane staircase light.
