Description
Croes-y-Parc Baptist Chapel is a Baptist chapel with a long-wall facade, constructed of stone that is roughcast rendered and painted, topped with a slate roof featuring an end stack on the left and a slate-hung west gable end. The facade has a four-window range of round-headed small pane sashes with exposed frames and intersecting glazing bars, and a stone date plaque is located in the center. The two tall windows in the middle illuminate the pulpit and the flanking entrances, which have raised surrounds and fanlights. These fanlights are protected by modern meshing, and the six-panel doors have added external boarding. A narrow front yard separates the chapel from the burial ground above and is enclosed by original iron railings with spearhead finials. Each floor of the east gable end features a single camber-headed horned 12-pane sash window, while the rear has a similar range of square-headed windows.
Inside, the chapel has a plain rendered rectangular interior that follows the traditional long-wall facade plan, with the pulpit positioned against the front wall. A raked canted gallery extends around the remaining three sides, with a polished wood panelled front supported by cast-iron columns with ring mouldings. Access to the interior is provided through lobbies at both entrances, leading to staircases with swept handrails. The ceiling features a plaster rose, and the walls are equipped with fittings for oil lamps. The seating consists of open-back pews. The later 19th-century pulpit includes balustraded steps topped with acorn finials, and there is a memorial tablet above it dedicated to Dafydd William in English. The stairs to the gallery have ramped handrails and stick balusters, and there are simple dark-stained open-back benches. The chapel has undergone 20th-century alterations below the gallery to create a schoolroom and kitchen.
