Description

This is a terrace of ten houses, numbered 1 to 10 Pwll-y-Min Crescent, dating from the early 20th century. The terrace is arranged in a crescent shape and displays a distinctive architectural style, blending elements of Moorish, Arts and Crafts, and early Modernist design, including flat roofs. The houses are built with painted render and have flat roofs with coping stones. They have multipane casement windows, each with a hoodmould above, and boarded front doors incorporating a central glazed panel. Each house is two storeys high, with an additional tower room. While the houses are generally similar, they are not identical. Typically, each has a roughly central doorway accentuated by mosaic work within a lunette shape, flanked by small hall windows. Above the doorway are two-light casement windows. To one side of the entrance is a projecting bay window with two storeys and splayed sides. To the other side is a set-back, square turret with a flat roof, which rises above the main roofline, featuring a single window on each storey and a doorway leading to the flat roof. A narrow bay, set back from the turret, connects to adjacent properties. Projecting in front of the turret and entrance bay is a single-storey, flat-roofed block that links the houses. The rear elevation is simpler, with a plain three-window arrangement. The parapets of numbers 3 and 4, and 5 and 6, are swept and stepped, creating a focal point in the centre of the terrace. Originally, the terrace was complemented by a curved yew hedge with individual boarded gates featuring full-width hinges. Number 2 has had its original wood casement windows replaced.
