Description
Old Court is a former courthouse built from roughcast-rendered stone, featuring a slate roof and a yellow brick end stack. The building dates back to 1550, as indicated by a date plaque above the pointed arched chamfered stone entrance doorway on the left. The entrance is flanked by tiny staircase windows on both storeys, and the walls have a slight batter. The structure is two storeys high with an attic and has a two-window range with 20th-century glazing in a style reminiscent of the 16th century. The building has been extended at the rear.
Inside, the main ground floor room includes an open fireplace with a chamfered 4-centred arched wooden lintel and a recess for a bake oven. There is a pointed chamfered arch with heavy jambs leading to a staircase on the right, and to the left, a beamed ceiling recess with four cross beams. A pointed arched doorway at the rear features bolt holes, and there is a blocked opening in the side wall shared with the Star Inn, where another pointed arched doorway can be seen. A spiral staircase with stone steps and a corbelled vault ascends through two storeys to the attic, where a main A-frame timber is visible.
