Description

The Old Court House is a house that was formerly a court house, dating back to the 14th century. It features a timber frame and plastered exterior, with a red brick front that was added around 1800. The roofs are covered with peg tiles and are generally gabled. The building has two storeys, with a catslide lean-to at the rear and a one-storey extension with a gable to the east and a glazed lean-to. There is a long 17th-century extension at the back, which has a lower ridge line and a lean-to on its north side. Both gable ends of the main block are rendered.

The front is made of red brick in Flemish bond, with random grey headers, rubbed brick window heads and arches, a string band, and a moulded brick cornice. The first floor has four tripartite double-hung sash windows without glazing bars, while the ground floor has three similar tripartite double-hung sash windows with lobed plastered surrounds and keystones, set within semi-circular arched recesses. The off-centre double entrance door is treated similarly, featuring a segmental head with a plain fanlight. There are opposed flights of steps with painted timber handrails and a small ridge line stack off-centre.

Inside, the high-quality and massive timber frame is largely exposed, showcasing moulded arch bracing to tie beams and bridging joists, as well as closely spaced studwork. Two contemporary door heads remain, along with a crown post roof of cross-quadrate form that has shaped bracing reaching up to the soulace pieces. There is a large inserted inglenook stack with a timber mantel beam and some 17th-century panelling.
