Description

This is a late 16th- and early 17th-century house, located in Hatfield Broad Oak, with an attached 18th-century garden wall. The house is timber-framed and originally plastered, but has red brick facades on the north and east sides. It is arranged in an 'L' shape, with a gabled pegtile roof and a hipped corner at the northeast. The house is two storeys high, with single-storey rear lean-to additions.

The east front features 18th-century red brickwork, a parapet, moulded cornice, string band, and plinth. It has two three-light leaded light iron casement windows and one blank recess, above a similar window and a double-hung sash with small panes and shutters. The north elevation of the main block shows four double-hung sash windows with small panes and shutters, above three similar windows. An off-centre entrance door has a flat hood supported by curved brackets. The north elevation is constructed of early 19th-century red brickwork. A lower ridge line 19th-century extension is located at the west end and contains one double-hung sash window with small panes on each floor. There is a large square stack centrally on the front roof slope and a smaller stack at the west gable end.

Inside, the original timber frame is exposed, featuring stop-chamfered bridging joists, wide-span tie beams and jowled posts. A newel staircase with a partly contemporary handrail rises behind the main stack. An 18th-century garden wall is attached to the northeast corner and curves around the frontage, with a reduced height on the north side.
