Description

A shop and office, incorporating former houses, dating to the 14th/15th century, with significant alterations in the late 16th century and subsequent periods. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a gabled peg tile roof. A long slate-roofed range extends to the rear, alongside 20th-century extensions. The front elevation features two 20th-century casements, two 19th-century 2-light casements with cross pattern glazing bars, a 20th-century projecting shop front at the south end, an entrance door, and further 20th-century casements, some with small panes, and a recessed entrance door. An 18th-century red brick stack projects through the front roof slope.

The building is a complex of different builds, including a jettied, two-bay, late 16th-century structure at the south end, characterised by heavy straight arcade bracing. One bay may have served as a workshop, evidenced by a large contemporary rear wall stack. A 19th-century bakery is located to the rear of this south bay, featuring a large brick oven with an iron door. To the north of this block are the remains of a 14th/15th-century service crosswing, which was formerly jettied and had a crown post roof, with heavy arch braces to the tie beams and a very wide stud spacing. Beyond this, one bay of a former open hall remains, with a heavy collar purlin and curious double collars. At the very north end of the block, truncated remnants of a further probable 16th-century crosswing are visible, impacted by the widening of the side alley. Group value lies in the building's historic association with local trade and industry.
