Description

The Old Forge is a pair of cottages and a former forge, dating from the mid-17th century. The buildings are timber framed and plastered. The cottage block consists of two storeys and attics, topped with a gabled peg tile roof. The forge, located to the north, is a tall single-storey structure also with a gabled peg tile roof.

The Old Forge Cottage features two double-hung sash windows with small panes and moulded surrounds above two similar windows. It has a central early 19th-century doorcase with simple panelled pilasters and a flat hood. Lyndhurst, the other cottage, has one 20th-century small-paned casement window on each floor, along with a similar flat hooded doorcase that has an architrave instead of pilasters. The forge has 20th-century casement windows with a single central horizontal glazing bar.

At the rear of Old Forge Cottage, there is a large mid-17th-century stack above an inglenook, which has a moulded brick cornice but has been rebuilt above this. Inside, there are some old doors and simple exposed framing, including stop-chamfered bridging joists. The roof features joggled side purlins and a continuous rear lean-to.
