Description

Hope Cottage and North Cottage form a pair of houses, originally a single dwelling, dating back to the 15th century or earlier. The construction is timber-framed and plastered, though the east end has white-painted weatherboarding. The roofs are gabled and covered in peg tiles. The western part, now Hope Cottage, features a crosswing with decorative finialed bargeboards and a gabled porch hood. A date plaque with the initials "W.P." and "1873" is located high on the wall. This section includes one double-hung sash window with small panes on each floor. North Cottage has a two-light 19th-century casement window with cross pattern glazing bars above a similar three-light casement, and a front door. A large, square red brick chimney stack rises from the ridge line between the two units. Inside North Cottage are moulded bridging joists with two ogees and a flat chamfer.
