Description
Siloh Independent Chapel is a building constructed from coursed rubble stone with freestone dressings and a slate roof, dating from 1876. The chapel features a classical three-bay front, characterized by giant order pilasters, a pediment, and a depressed central arch. The pediment above the wider central bay is adorned with acroteria and an apex finial, while vermiculated panels are positioned over the pilasters. The windows include vermiculated keystones and springers, along with sill and plinth bands. The outer bays have small pane windows that extend to full height, and the center has a stepped tripartite window. The name of the chapel, "SILOH INDEPENDENT CHAPEL," is inscribed on a scroll tablet, with "ERECTED ANNO DOMINI 1876" surrounding the attic roundel. The central entrance features round-headed four-panelled doors with keyblock architraves, and the space between the doors is decorated with painted foliage, including a dove. The foundation stone was laid by William Jenkins of Swansea.
To the left of the chapel is a rubble wall with a door leading to a side passage. The side elevations are five bays wide, with sash windows and round arch leaded windows in the gallery, along with segmental headed windows below. The basement schoolroom has similar segmental headed windows. The rear of the building is pebbledashed and includes an attic oculus, with a door providing access to the basement schoolroom. The forecourt is separated from the street by a low stone wall topped with railings between panelled stone piers with scalloped cappings.
Originally, the gallery featured a bowed cast-iron palmette design around three sides, which was gilded and supported by timber columns, some of which were barley-twist. The interior suffered severe fire damage in the 1980s and was not accessible during the inspection.
