Description

Nantyffyllon Workmen's Institute is a building constructed from coursed rock-faced stonework, featuring painted brick quoins and unpainted details. It has a modern slate roof and presents a strictly symmetrical façade with a recessed center of two bays and forward wings, each also consisting of two bays that contain the entrances. The entrances are framed by two identical Tuscan porticos supported by columns, each surrounding a pair of panelled doors. Prominently displayed are six foundation stones, all laid in 1925. At the center of the building, there is a corbelled chimney made of red brick, which has likely been altered at the top, and bears an inscribed panel that reads "NANTYFFYLLON WORKMEN'S INSTITUTE 1926." On either side of the chimney, there are large 12-pane sash windows with stone lintels and labels, as well as stone sills with aprons. The wings feature one similar window in the outer bay, linked by a label string to a smaller paned window above the entrance on each side. The building has two-storey bays at each end, articulated in the same manner. The roof slopes down over the front bays and is hipped over the end bays. The rear and ends of the building are pebbledashed and have two tiers of similar windows.

Inside, a dog-leg stair leads from the entrance lobby in each wing to an upper assembly hall with six bays and a proscenium arch. On the ground floor, there is a dining room that spans five bays.
