Description
One of a double row of terraced housing facing each other across pavements, road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each with a door to the side, one window above, and one to the ground floor, sharing a central stack and roofline. The roofline steps to accommodate the rising ground between pairs. The houses are constructed of snecked roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels, and some brick to the stacks. The roofs were originally Welsh slate, though most are now replaced with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles. The original windows were 8/8 pane sashes, a few of which remain; later adaptations include some horned sashes, although most glazing is now late 20th-century PVC-U, though original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally had similar glazing and, according to an Ordnance Survey map of 1875, had no rear outshuts, although these are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but a separate stone and slate WC and coal shed are located at the end of each double plot, many of which survive in adapted form. At each terrace end, except for the southeast end, is a later house varying from the standard pattern.
