Description

One of a double row of terraced houses facing each other, these properties are situated across pavements, a road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each with a door to the side, a single window above, and one to the ground floor, sharing a central stack and roofline. The roofline features stepped sections to accommodate the rising ground between the pairs. The construction is of snecked, roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels. Brick is used in the stacks. Originally roofed with Welsh slate, most are now replaced with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles remaining. The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, a few of which survive; others have been replaced with later horned sashes, and most now feature late 20th-century PVC-U glazing, though the original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally had similar glazing as shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1875, which depicted no rear extensions, though these are now common. There are few dividing fences between the properties, but at the end of each double plot, a stone and slate WC (water closet) and coal shed originally stood, many of which remain in adapted form. At each terrace end, except for the southeast end, there is a later house that differs from the standard pattern. One house, the least altered externally, retains its original 8/8 pane sash glazing and Welsh slate roof.
