Description

27-52 Park Terrace comprises a group of terraced houses facing each other across pavements, a road, and a narrow green. These houses were built in pairs, featuring a door to the side, a single window above, and one to the ground floor, along with a shared central stack and roofline. The roofline incorporates steps to accommodate the rising ground between the pairs. The houses were constructed from roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels, featuring brick detailing on the stacks. Originally, the roofs were covered with Welsh slate, although most have since been replaced with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles remaining. The original windows were 8/8 pane sashes, some of which still exist; later replacements include horned sashes, and most glazing is now late 20th-century PVC-U, though the original window openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally mirrored this design, as depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1875, which showed no rear extensions. However, such extensions are now common. Few dividing fences separate the properties. Each double plot originally had a separate stone and slate-roofed WC and coal shed, many of which remain in adapted form. Later houses, differing from the standard design, are located at each terrace end, except for the southeast end. A date of 1865 is scratched into the stone of one door surround.
