Description
27-52 Park Terrace consists of a double row of terraced houses facing each other across pavements, a road, and a narrow green. The houses are built in pairs with a side door, one window above, and one on the ground floor. They share a central stack and roofline, with steps in the roofline to accommodate the rising ground between pairs. The buildings are constructed from snecked, roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and featuring massive single lintels. Some stacks are made of brick. The original roofs were covered with Welsh slate, though most have now been replaced with concrete tiles and blue brick ridge tiles.
The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, with a few remaining, while later adaptations include some horned sashes. Most of the glazing is now late 20th-century PVC-U, but the original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations had similar glazing and are shown on the 1875 Ordnance Survey map without rear outshuts, though these have since become common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but each double plot has a separate stone and slate WC and coal shed at the end, many of which survive in adapted forms. At each end of the terrace, except for the southeast, there is a later house that varies from the standard pattern. An end-of-terrace house was added later on a larger plot and does not have a street entrance, as indicated on the 1875 Ordnance Survey map.
