Description
27-52 Park Terrace comprises a row of terraced houses facing each other across pavements, a road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in the 18th century in pairs, with each pair sharing a central stack and roofline. The rising ground level between the pairs necessitated variations in the roofline. The buildings are constructed of roughly dressed ironstone, with large stones bordering each opening and massive single lintels above. Some brickwork is visible on the stacks. Originally, the roofs were covered in Welsh slate, though most have since been replaced with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles remaining. The original windows were 8/8 pane sashes, a few of which survive. Later replacements are horned sashes, although most windows now have late 20th-century PVC-U glazing. The original window openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally featured similar glazing and, according to an Ordnance Survey map from 1875, were without rear extensions, although these are now commonplace. Few dividing fences exist between the properties. At the end of each double plot, a separate stone and slate WC (water closet) and coal shed were originally present, and many survive in adapted form. The ends of the terrace, except for the southeast corner, feature later houses that differ from the standard design.
