Description

The building is a library constructed in the stripped classical style typical of the 1930s. It features buff brick with ashlar dressings, including a plinth, cornice, and string courses on the main block, topped with a flat roof. The library is situated on a stepped site and consists of a main block with continuous glazing at the first floor level, surrounded by an advanced ground floor block that forms a podium on the northwest and northeast sides, along with a similar advanced block at the basement level on the southeast side.

The original main entrance is located on the northeast elevation, facing Singleton Abbey. The design is strictly symmetrical, with a slightly recessed entrance bay that is elevated from the advanced flanking blocks of the podium. The doorway is framed by a moulded ashlar surround, featuring the college arms above, which is signed 'Verner Rees'. There are paired windows in the flanking bays. The northwest podium is highlighted by a band of closely spaced windows, with the glazing divided horizontally and featuring margin lights with metal glazing bars. There is an additional entrance recessed at the far right of this block.

The main block rises from the podium and is characterized by a continuous band of fenestration, separated by narrow ashlar pilasters and bordered by continuous ashlar bands at the head and sill levels, with a further advancing string course below that balances the plain cornice. The tall windows are divided horizontally and by margin lights in metal glazing bars, and this arrangement is mirrored on the rear (southeast-facing) elevation. Each return elevation also features similar triple windows. The rear includes a basement storey that replicates the arrangement of the ground-floor podium block on the northwest side, but with corner entrance blocks that are slightly advanced and step back twice. The ground floor level has widely spaced simple windows.

The building was not inspected in 2003.
