Description

The piers and railings at Calfaria Baptist Chapel date from the 19th century and enclose two lawns in front of the chapel. The low retaining walls are made of rock-faced squared rubble with rock-faced coping stones. These walls support short railings that have a square section, featuring wrought spearheads and larger cast-iron finials on the intermediate stanchions, which are held up by scrolled supports.

In the center, there are two narrow sandstone ashlar gatepiers topped with corniced pyramid caps. These piers support two gates that have a down-curved top rail, a double mid-rail with circular designs, and similar spearhead rails and dog-bars. The wall on the left is straight, while the one on the right curves outward. The outer front piers are made of rock-faced stone and are pyramid-capped. To the left, there is a pair of piers with a matching single pedestrian gate between them, while to the right, there is a single pier that is paired with another pier and railings that front the manse, although this is not included in the listing.

Along each side of the central path and at the upper end of each lawn, there are later railings on low rock-faced stone coping. These rails are round in section and also feature cast-iron finials.
