Description
96 Walter Road is a terrace of five houses built around 1865 in the Jacobethan style, featuring shaped gables. The buildings are three storeys high, constructed of stucco with a banded ground floor, and have slate or tiled roofs. Each house consists of two bays, with the right bay being broader and slightly advanced. This bay has a shaped gable topped with a pinnacle and urns at the shoulders, although these urns are missing at Nos 95 and 96. The second-floor window has a moulded surround, as does the first-floor window, while the ground floor features a splayed bay.
The left bay is narrower and slightly recessed, also topped with a gable and a pinnacle, which is lost at No 96. The second-floor window here is round-headed with a moulded surround, and the first-floor window also has a moulded surround. The ground floor includes an entrance doorway with a moulded doorcase and a shallow bracketed hood. Notably, No 43 St James’ Crescent has an extra bay window and an entrance from the side, while No 96 features a window with a shallow architrave.
On the west side, the return has a gable with a pinnacle and urns at the shoulders, a second-floor round-headed window with a moulded surround, and two first-floor windows with moulded surrounds. The ground floor has a deep porch with a round-headed entrance doorway and round-headed windows on the sides, along with a window to the right of the porch. To the left, there is one window each on the first and ground floors, along with a lower block that has one window. Additionally, there is a single-storey ground floor section set forward, which includes a door to the left, a tripartite sash window, and a splayed bay window. The return to the right (west) features a narrow porch.
