Description

The Castle Cinema is a Grade II listed building located on Worcester Place. It features a classical design with Beaux Arts influence and is set on a slope. The building has two storeys and three bays, constructed of ashlar stone. It showcases a giant Doric order treatment, a triglyph frieze, a heavy cornice, and an openwork parapet with enriched supports and latticework panels. Behind the parapet, there is a brick gable end. An elaborately carved cartouche with festoons and a wreath is positioned above the central entrance, while the side windows feature lattice-glazing and festoons. The ground floor has channelled pilasters, recessed swing doors, and fanlights.

The tall facade on Strand Street has three storeys and is made of brick with freestone dressings. It includes a main cornice over the first floor, channelled quoins, cill bands, and keystones. A frieze on the second floor displays a gilt inscription reading "Castle Cinema." The first floor has seven openings with blind arched heads above, and the ground floor features a large central doorway flanked by lesser doors.

Inside, the cinema retains its original longitudinal foyer within the Worcester Place facade, showcasing classical detailing in the architraves, cornices, and triple entrances to the auditorium. The central entrance is blocked by a later paybox, and there are staircases with fine wrought iron brackets supporting the handrails. Classical detailing continues under the gallery, which is now partitioned from the main auditorium, with mostly original three-panel doors.

The auditorium itself is a plain rectangular space with a segmental vault that has been upholstered. It features a coved cornice and pilasters behind 1960s wall coverings. The original sinuous gallery front includes safety bars at circle level, while the stage end was remodeled for a wide screen around 1962. There are subsidiary rooms located below the screen end.
