Description

Big House Farmhouse is a two-storey late Georgian farmhouse located in the center of Llanmadoc village, overlooking a triangular green. It is set back behind a walled garden, with a former stable yard to the west. The farmhouse features a three-window front elevation, with rendered and white painted stonework walls, a slate roof with a tile ridge, and rendered end stacks capped in three courses of red brickwork. The front windows are 12-pane with hornless sashes and thin glazing bars, and there are stone sills beneath them. Each gable end has a small attic light.

To the left and right of the main house are single-storey extensions that are similarly rendered, painted white, and have slate roofs. There are also irregular rear extensions made of similar materials. The four-window wing to the left has 12-pane sash windows that match those of the main house, while the wing to the right has a steeper roof pitch, a tall narrow brick chimney, and a modern window. The rear fenestration consists entirely of modern windows. A later addition, the porch is also rendered white with a slated roof and features modern windows on the sides and front, but the doorway behind has the shape of a boxed-in fanlight.

The walled stable yard to the west is made of rubble masonry, part rendered, with assorted window openings and boarded doors, topped with corrugated roofs. This stable yard is included for its group value with the house.

Inside, the layout is conventional, based on an original central lobby and staircase. The staircase, which is in the Regency style and not original to the house, has inch square balusters and a plain handrail.
