Description

The Old Rectory is a large, boldly designed house from the 19th century, featuring two storeys plus an attic. It is oriented north/south and built on a stone plinth, with a rendered and painted white exterior and a steep slate roof pitched at about 45 degrees. The roof has two red-brick chimneys on the mid slope and two grey rendered chimneys that penetrate the ridge.

A notable feature of the roof is its deep overhang, measuring about one metre at the east eaves and over two metres at most of the west eaves. There is a nearly central gabled projection on the east side, with a verge that overhangs by about a metre. A corresponding wall projection at the rear is included beneath the main roof slope. At both ends, the wall plates, ridge piece, and two purlins extend outward, some supported by black-painted timber brackets, while the eaves projections are similarly supported at intervals by large brackets. The building lacks rainwater gutters or downpipes, and all timberwork has been restored and painted black.

The main gable walls are partly advanced, with the north wall featuring a windowed bay at the ground storey and a chimney extending from the first storey up. The south wall's advanced section contains the main entrance door, which is sheltered by a miniature 'Swiss' porch roof.

The windows throughout are timber casements, either two or three lights, painted black, with each light consisting of two panes and flush timber sills and lintels. Additionally, seven rooflights have been inserted into the west slope of the roof.

Inside, there is extensive use of clear finished pine joinery, including exposed floor joists, panelled doors, and stairs.
