Description
Pontyspig Cottage is a building constructed from painted stone rubble and topped with a stone tile roof. It is a small rectangular structure featuring a gable entry and a single-storey lean-to addition on the opposite gable end. The roof has been raised to replace an original thatched roof with the stone tile, a change that is clearly visible on the south wall.
The entry gable includes a doorway on the left, which has a plank door with a stone slab hood above it and a drip string overhead. To the right of the doorway is a small window, likely providing light to the staircase. The road-facing elevation has two small windows, which are probably original openings, though the windows themselves are 20th-century wooden replacements. On the garden elevation, there are also two small windows with drips; the openings are original, except for the one on the right, which has a dropped cill. Above these is a small casement window that lights the upper floor. To the left, there are French doors leading to the extension. The non-entry gable features a garret window above the lean-to roof. The gable end stacks include an old and weathered stack for thatch on the entry side, while the other stack is a later addition.
Inside, it is said that the cottage retains a post and panel screen and a fire stair, with a window for this feature surviving in the gable end. The inner room would have originally been unheated, and the chimney stack for this room differs from the entry gable stack, likely dating from the time when the roof was raised.
