Description
No. 38 is a shop with a former theatre at the rear, featuring a mid-to-late 19th-century facade facing The Watton. The building has three storeys and three windows, with rendered walls and a slate roof that includes end brick chimneys and projecting eaves. The facade is accentuated by end pilasters with capitals and a dressed stone plinth. The second and first floors have 4-pane sash windows without glazing bars, set in openings with moulded architraves and plain sills. The ground floor includes a 19th-century style shopfront with a half-glazed door on the left and a window on the right, both framed by pilasters, a fascia, brackets, and a cornice that also extends across the central doorway, which features a half-glazed panelled door and a curved-headed fanlight. A similar design is present in the smaller shopfront in the right-hand bay.
At the rear, there is a lower wing made of stone rubble, also three storeys tall and comprising two bays. The former theatre is attached to this rear wing and is a tall one-storey structure with stone walls and a slate hipped roof. Its north-west facade has four tall sash windows with glazing bars and a blocked doorway at the north-east end. The theatre has a late 19th-century roof structure, possibly built around the same time as the former mill to the rear in 1894. The stage has been removed, and much of the theatre area is now covered in plasterboard or plywood, with few original details believed to remain.
