War Memorial at SS Cynidr & Mary Church

The war memorial at Cynidr & Mary Church is a stone Celtic wheel cross that stands on a tapered four-sided shaft and a rusticated tapered plinth. The memorial features flat inscription panels with gold-painted lettering.

On the east side, facing the road, the top of the shaft reads ‘GWELL ANGEU NA CHYWILYDD’, while the base states, ‘IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918’. Below this, on the plinth, are the names and details of individuals who served, including ‘DISPATCH RIDER F. POWELL JONES SEPT. 26TH 1914’, ‘PTE. WILLIAM V. LLOYD NOVR. 5TH 1914’, ‘LANCE CORP. REGINALD W. WILLIAMS JUNE 4TH 1915’, ‘CAPT. P. POWELL JONES APRIL 21ST 1916’, and the phrase ‘THE SOULS OF THE RIGHTEOUS ARE IN HIS HANDS’. It is noted that the memorial was ‘ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF LLANGYNIDR’.

The north side lists additional names, including ‘PTE. JOHN DAVIES JANY. 25TH 1917’, ‘LANCE CORP. ALBERT L. JENKINS MAY 4TH 1917’, and others. The south side includes names such as ‘PTE HARRY WILLIAMS NOVR. 23RD 1917’ and ‘PTE ALFRED JAMES LOVETT APRIL 12TH 1919’. The west side (rear) commemorates those who served in World War II with the inscription ‘1939-1945’ and includes names like ‘GUNR. JAMES WILLIAM BAUCH R.A.’ and ‘SGT. DANIEL IVAN PARRY R.A.F.V.R.’.

The memorial is set on a square base, surrounded by a paved area with low kerbing. It features low gateposts in the churchyard wall with wrought iron gates and a single step leading up to it.
