Description

The Town Hall is a Grade II listed building featuring two storeys and an attic, with a three-bay elevation facing High Street and a longer seven-bay return along Tredegar Street. The ground floor is constructed of stone, with arcading that has been filled in with brickwork and includes round-headed windows. The upper floor is finished in stucco and has quoins. The pedimented elevation on High Street features an attic window with a pedimented architrave and a small-pane sash window. On the first floor, there are small-pane sash windows set within pedimented architraves; the central architrave is segmental while the others are triangular. The ground floor has three round-headed arches.

The elevation facing Tredegar Street also has two storeys and seven bays, with the first floor showcasing 24-pane sash windows, except for the first window which has narrow paired sashes. The ground floor features an arcade of round-headed arches, infilled with brick and round-headed windows. The rear elevation facing Lion Street consists of two storeys and an attic, with three bays and a simpler design, topped by a roof with a half hip.

Inside, there is an oval lobby with a fine iron staircase that has an elaborate scrolled balustrade, along with coving and a rose at the upper level. The ground floor includes the Mayor's parlour, dating from 1888-1889, which features covings, and the Magistrate's Court, which has a bench and a 19th-century fireplace. On the upper floor, the Theatre and Assembly Room, also from 1888, boasts a high coved ceiling and side pilasters with heavy scrolled brackets where the cornice breaks forward. At the rear, there is a balcony with a curved and swept front, and the stage features a proscenium arch flanked by heavy square pillars with large scroll capitals.
