Description

Castle House, also known as No 14, and Ely House, No 13, are a pair of houses located on The Postern. They date from the 19th century and are two storeys high with a basement, featuring a five-window front for the pair and a central entry that leads to the rear yard. The houses have a slate roof and the front wall is faced with blocks of grey stone laid in regular courses, accented by bathstone architraves. There is a stringcourse at the first floor level.

The first floor has sixteen-pane sash windows, while each end bay on the ground floor features a large six-pane sash window. The central entrance has a wide semi-elliptical arch with a keystone inscribed "Ely Place," and is flanked on either side by a flight of steps with railings that lead up to a semi-circular headed door with a plain semi-circular fanlight above it. There are small forecourts in front of the basement windows in the end bays, which are enclosed by 19th-century railings.
