Description

Postern House is a former prison that has been converted into a house. It is a two-storey building with a two-window front facing The Postern, while the rear elevation slopes down an additional level towards the river. The exterior is constructed from coursed red-brown stone and features a pyramidal hipped roof with a large square stone chimney.

On the first floor, there are two windows with semi-circular heads; the northern window on the left is smaller and has iron catches. The ground floor includes a semi-circular headed doorway on the left, which has an overlight with an iron grille and a door with cover strips. To the right, there is a sash window without glazing bars.

The right return of the building has three windows, but only the rear bay is visible. This includes a semi-circular window on the top floor, a round-arched recess with a rectangular casement window below it, and a small camber-headed cell window below that. The rear elevation facing the river has a two-window layout with round-arched windows, one of which is blind on the left.

Adjacent to the two-storey block is a lower block built of snecked stone with a slate roof that is hipped to the right. The right return features a camber-headed cell window. The rear elevation facing the river has four windows, all of which are camber-headed cell windows, along with a doorway located in the third bay.
