Hoffmann Kiln of Eclipse Brickworks

The Hoffmann Kiln of Eclipse Brickworks is a late type kiln with a racetrack plan, measuring approximately 12 meters by 40 meters. It has a round-ended interior but square ends with slight chamfers on the exterior. The kiln stands about 3 meters high, has a flat top, and features a strongly battered profile. The external construction is made of vitrified red brick. All access doorways have two-ring arches, although one access arch has collapsed while the others remain intact. Originally, there was a roof over the entire kiln, as evidenced by RAF photographs, with remnants visible on the side of the chimney, which is located on the west side.

Inside, there are four chambers in the curved ends and additional chambers along the straight sides. Each typical chamber is about 4 meters square, featuring a low elliptical vaulted roof that reaches about 2 meters in height. There are 15 fuel chutes made with special firebricks in the roof, along with arched flues leading to the center and perimeter, and a charging doorway. The flooring consists of brick paving, and each chamber is separated from its neighbors by a deep rib of brickwork. The vault between the ribs is constructed of firebrick, with earth and rubble filling the space between the vault and the flat top.
