Description

Horeb Baptist Chapel is a rural chapel built in a simple Classical style, constructed from irregularly coursed local sandstone set in a white lime mortar that includes coarse grit. The exterior features an axe-dressed finish with larger quoins. The front and right side of the chapel display exposed masonry, while the other sides are rendered. Although the roof has been replaced with concrete tiles, it still maintains its original deep verge and decorative eaves.

The front elevation includes a central round-headed door made up of two three-panel leaves, with a small round-headed window above it. Flanking the door are round-headed sash windows, all of which have narrow margins and central panes. The side elevations feature tall round-headed windows with plain fixed glazing, and the building is equipped with cast-iron rainwater goods.

Freestanding walls at the front of the chapel are topped with copings made from copper-working slag.

Inside, visitors enter through a plain anteroom. Symmetrical staircases without doors lead to the gallery, each with a handrail on one side, newels, and only one baluster to support the handrail. The chapel has symmetrical doors, each consisting of two two-panel leaves. A coloured glass window enhances the interior. The seating is arranged in four blocks made of panelled joinery with carved seat-ends, facing inward towards the pulpit. The pulpit features a panelled front and is accessed by twin stairs with newels and turned balusters, with similar railings on the sides.

The gallery is located against the wall opposite the pulpit, with its front designed in broad panels featuring prominent mouldings and a central clock. A single cast iron support column, 120 mm in diameter, supports the gallery, which has four steeply pitched rows of seating similar to the main seating. The ceiling includes three painted decorative features that were once used for pendant lights and ventilators.
