Description
The Limekiln at Green Cwm is a large structure, standing 6 meters high and built in a bow shape from the nearby limestone scarp. There are indications of associated quarrying at the rear of the kiln. To the right, there is a single working recess, and on the left, a ramp leads from ground level to the top of the kiln. The right side of the kiln has been restored with a sloping shape that may not be historically accurate.
Constructed from local rubble limestone, the kiln features a lining made of firebrick. The working recess has straight sides but is corbelled over the draw hole, incorporating several cast iron beams. The roof of the recess is a well-formed segmental arch with a span of approximately 3 meters. The draw hole is neatly framed with bevelled bricks, an iron lintel, and one remaining firebar.
At the top of the kiln lining, there is a small raised wall equipped with a safety grille. The fire-brickwork is one brick thick and shows signs of lime encrustation. The internal diameter at the top measures about 2.5 meters, narrowing to about 1 meter at the draw level.
