Description
Big House Farmhouse is a farmhouse constructed from axe-dressed local stone arranged in courses, topped with a slate roof and a tile ridge. The east gable and the end chimneys are rendered. There is a rear extension that spans the full width of the house and features a catslide roof.
The front elevation has three windows, with the fenestration shifted to the right to accommodate the large original fireplace in the kitchen on the left. The central upper window is also offset further to the right to avoid the apex of the porch roof, which is made of similar materials and appears to be original. On the left side, there is a ground storey projection, likely the site of an original bread oven next to the kitchen fireplace. The window openings are original but have tile sills and replaced frames. Each gable end features a single attic window, and there is a side door in the east gable elevation. The rear elevation includes three modern windows and one door.
Across the yard at the rear, there is a bakehouse and brewhouse, with a bread oven on the left and a boiler with a hearth on the right.
Inside, the room to the left is the original kitchen, which retains a stone floor and a large fireplace fitted with a 19th-century range that has a central fireplace, a hob boiler on the left, and a hob oven on the right, complete with a fender. To the right is the original settle with a shaped side. In the corner to the right of the hearth is the staircase. The chamfered floor joists above are mostly made of pine, with some in oak.
